Once Upon a Time

Once Upon a Time

Our first video from 30 miles apart! This is an arrangement we put together for ourselves recently. "Once Upon a Time" is from a not very successful 1962 Broadway production called All American. Mel Brooks was one of the writers early in his carreer. Ray Bolger played the lead role. The music is by Charles Strouse, with lyrics by Lee Adams. It's a sad happy song about a past love. This coronavirus pandemic is going to keep us apart for the unknowable future, so we'll have to continue to duo the best we can. We already miss our regular rehearsals! With all our duo and orchestra performances cancelled, the next months will be challenging. It's impossible to sync up live because of the delay, so the only way I could think to do it is to record the parts separately. It's going to take a little experimentation, but not bad for a first try. So I asked Kathryn to record her part on her phone, then send it to me. After downloading it, I played her track on my PC while playing along on my fiddle and recording that on my phone. Then I put it together and got the two parts kind of in sync with some video editing software. Once upon a time a girl with moonlight in her eyes Put her hand in mine and said she loved me so But that was once upon a time, very long ago Once upon a time we sat beneath a willow tree Counting all the stars and waiting for the dawn But that was once upon a time, now the tree is gone How the breeze ruffled up her hair How we always laughed as though tomorrow wasn't there We were young and didn't have a care Where did it go? Once upon a time the world was sweeter than we knew Everything was ours, how happy we were then But somehow once upon a time never comes again
