Chicago singer and actor Sophie Grimm, who performed in the Auditorium Theatre’s 2019 birthday celebration for the legendary composer Stephen Sondheim, saluted the icon on his 90th birthday (March 22) with a special at-home performance on Facebook Live. It Was A Rebellion has been in development for three years. An early version was performed as a pirate radio broadcast at Homan Square, a former Chicago Police Department black site. It mixes music from the Civil Rights Era and the Black Panther Party, news reports and political speeches, and ephemeral and symbolic sounds to articulate public expressions of Black rage.
It Was A Rebellion (House Mix) plays on the political roots of Black with a Chicago-style dance party vibe.
